DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

While foreign contribution can neither be denied nor underestimated, it has to be realized that the earlier our aim of total self-reliance is achieved, better it is for us. As all of us know foreign aid is usually offered with certain strings attached to it. Aid giving countries try to exploit the developing countries both economically and politically. Development assistance is often given as a means of helping manufactures, producers and exporters of capital exporting countries to find new business. This clearly amounts to economic exploitation. The governments of the aid giving countries try to exert political pressure and influence the foreign policies of the developing countries. They also try to gain certain military advantages. Since the amount, time and terms of the foreign aid are never certain, much of the purpose of the getting it is defeated. It would be much better if a common pool could be created under an international agency. All advanced countries could contribute to it at least one per cent of their gross national product. This fund could be operated by the representatives of the developing countries. Such a step would free them from the undesirable political influence of the advanced countries on their policy decisions.
