NEED FOR SELF DISCIPLINE
The behaviour of the young boys is the subject of comment the world over. Particularly distressing is the manifestation of the insulting conduct towards school and college going girls in university towns. While no condemnation can be too severe for such ungentle manly conduct wherever it may take place, a general enquiry is called for into the causes that have led to this kind of behaviour. Lack of reverence for women is only an offshoot from a larger evil. The real tragedy is surely the complete lack of self discipline evident in the behaviour of these youngsters. This lack of control needs to be dealt with broadly before we can hope to see improvements in its narrower aspects. We all know that the best way to teach a child anything is by example. But cases of young children who misbehave prove that many parents and teachers undoubtedly fail completely in their duty.
Both at home and at school far too many children are brought up to do what they like, to do a job badly, to leave it unfinished, and to have anything they want at the expense of other people’s convenience.
Parents say they cannot manage their children; it grows more and more difficult to find a teacher who can manage a class. And then the behaviour of parents and teachers is not always calculated to inspire respect. But perhaps the greatest harm is done by the perpetual rousing of senses by posters, films, magazines, advertisements, etc. Society will have to make a much more determined effort to mould the character of the children if this deterioration is to be halted.
The general conduct of young boys, especially their insulting behaviour towards girls, requires condemnation and enquiry. Lack of self discipline is the cause of this attitude. Parents and teachers by letting the boys do as they wish have failed in their duty. Improvement can be brought about by setting examples for young boys but the behaviour of parents and teachers hardly inspires respect. Media has aggravated the problem by showing on T.V. such matter as arouses their baser instincts.
